In 2005, Hathaway strayed away from family comedies and found critical praise for her performances in the independent hits Havoc and Brokeback Mountain alongside Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams. Her popularity quickly skyrocketed when she starred in the dramedy The Devil Wears Prada (2006) opposite Meryl Streep and perfected an English accent in the history romance Becoming Jane (2007).

She tapped into her comedic side in the romantic comedies Bride Wars (2009) opposite Kate Hudson and Valentine's Day (2010), as well as Tim Burton's fantasy film Alice in Wonderland (2010) alongside Johnny Depp and the animation flick Rio (2011).
